I knew from the start that an off the shelf air intake and radiator hoses were not in the cards. I didn’t want to source silicone elbows, aluminum elbows, clamps, and heater hoses from all over the place. I needed a reputable brand that stocked every bend and every size you could think of. Not to mention, take all the abuse the Z will dish out. Let me cut to the chase… HPS Performance is that place. Their quality of parts and their inventory is pretty impressive.
I’m proud to announce my partnership with HPS Performance in 2018! I put together a parts list and a few days later they showed up. First out of the box was the silicone hoses and elbows.
Next was the assortment of HPS T-bolt clamps and embossed clamps. I love how HPS has the correct sized clamps for silicone hoses. My 1.5″ clamps a slightly larger than my 1-3/8″ clamps. Most companies would stock a clamp that would “fit” both.
Last out of the box was the aluminum elbows and tubing. I’ll be pluming my radiator and building a full 4″ air intake with these.
I wasted no time fitting the parts to the Z. Once I cut all of my aluminum tubing to length and test fit the parts, I added a bead roll to the tubing. This helps with a good seal and secure fit.
HPS Performance gives you plenty of working room on their silicone elbows. That came in handy since I needed to trim mine. Silicone hoses are difficult to cut and cut cleanly. An old trick I learned is to use a scrap tube, slide the silicone hose/elbow over the tube and clamp it down. Then use the side of the clamp as the guide and use a fresh blade on your utility knife to cut the hose. The result is clean and straight silicone tube.
This was a really simple job for the Z. HPS parts fit perfect and makes a fabricated set up a breeze.
The air intake set up went together just as easy. I have to clear a lot of room out to duct the airflow from the radiator thought the hood. I think this is going to be a very efficient set up. On went a K&N filter, billet aluminum mass air flow sensor mount, and that’s a wrap.
All in all, I’m really impressed with the quality of parts that HPS Performance is putting out.
Maybe you’re not so savvy with fabrication. HPS Performance still has you covered! With hundreds of popular applications (even a 240Z), HPS offers OEM replacement silicone hose kits and performance air intake systems.
